  • Seeing the Change

Daniel describes his work as perhaps revealing, above all, the technical side of his practice. Yet those techniques also trace the direction his making has taken—the processes he returns to, the adjustments he makes, and the experiences he brings into each new piece.

Working closely on something, change can be difficult to see. One decision leads to another. A familiar technique becomes a little more assured; an experiment opens up a different possibility. Across a body of work, these small developments begin to reveal a direction.

For us at Co90, there is something quietly encouraging in this. We can give time to something we enjoy and care about doing well, moving at our own pace, even when the purpose or progress feels unclear. Sometimes it takes a step back to recognise how much has changed.

Narrative invites that wider view: to look at the individual pieces, then consider them together, and notice what continued practice can bring into view.

  • Daniel Chau 趙汝誠

Daniel Chau creates sculpted porcelain vessels, exploring how a form develops through making. He graduated from the ceramics programme jointly presented by RMIT University and Hong Kong Art School in 2007, and has exhibited in Hong Kong and internationally.

His practice begins on the pottery wheel. Patterns emerge as the clay turns; Daniel gently erases these traces before introducing new marks through carving. This gradual reworking connects his interest in craftsmanship with the accumulation and transformation of memory.

The Narrative Exhibition

A ceramic vessel offers several ways of looking. We might first notice its outline, then its colour, before moving closer to discover the marks across its surface.

Narrative brings together Daniel Chau’s ceramic works at Co90, inviting visitors to follow that movement from a first impression to a closer encounter. The exhibition offers an opportunity to consider each work individually and alongside others—to notice a relationship between forms, a change in finish, or a detail that becomes apparent only with time.

We invite you to move slowly through the collection and find the pieces that hold your attention.

A Surface Built Over Time

Daniel’s recent process has developed from spraying coloured slip to applying layers with a sponge, working at stages before and after the first firing. His experiments with slip and glaze have also introduced a more reflective finish.

These changes offer a starting point for looking more closely. Follow a mark across the curve of a vessel, examine where colour gathers, and notice how the surface responds to light.

Placed beside the finished works, glimpses of the making process help connect what we see with the actions that shaped it. A surface becomes something we can spend time reading.

Living with a Work

At Co90, we are interested in the relationships that grow between people and the objects they choose to live with.

An exhibition gives us the chance to begin that relationship through looking. You might return to the same vessel several times, drawn by its proportions, a particular mark or the way its surface catches the afternoon light. There is room for your own response.

Join us for a casual gathering with Daniel on 13 November from 6pm, or visit during the exhibition to explore the works at your own pace.
